Even the Gumballhead was a fingertip away
I got my Google Analytics Individual Qualification and am now an Inbound Marketing Certified Professional. And I breathe a lot easier.
But it took this first half of 2009 for me to re-learn the value of addition by subtraction. Much like how most veteran baseball pitchers learn that to achieve controls on their pitches they have to not throw them as hard, I’ve learned that to get what I need to get done I have to stop doing so much at a time.
Throughout the course of 2009, everything I’ve wanted or have tried to achieve has been a fingertip away. If it hasn’t been the Google SERPs it’s been other SEO/Social Media projects or Book of Blues or even dating.
My old boss used to tell me that the mistake most young career-minded professionals make is that they try to do to much so they can look valuable because of all the things they can do instead of becoming really good at a few things. I understand his point now. Things we learn the hard way.
Case in point – we had synergy issues at work. A co-worker in our department checked out when his/our advice wasn’t taken a few months back. As a result, I started covering for him until he got his mojo back. Sadly, that was never the case. It got to the point where I couldn’t sleep at night and my eye was twitching during the day because we were never going to hit our project goals. Moreso than our department, other departments were becoming affected – creative, programming…Not that he realized or perhaps cared. Some people our wound differently. With that thought, I hope my former partner-in-crime at work is enjoying his new work in the city. Hopefully, he’ll be happy. He was a good informative resource.
I’ll even say that, “I’m guessing he used his personal blog as his reference given all the time he’s put into it ,” because it’s not in me to completely refrain from a good tongue-in-cheek shot especially when I held it in for so long and the situation affected other co-workers and friends.
But now that it’s resolved, my health is recovering and I find I have more energy and have been more productive than when it was the two of us. I’ve even learned that video SEO is actually cake and that the indexing issues we’ve been having were a result of the way our system was designed. 3 words: “browser host solution.” And make sure someone has a flowchart of how our system works so you don’t spend two more all-nighters trying to fix the problem. And, at worst, make sure someone walks through your system step by step. Things we learn along the way.
As for everything being a Fingertip Away: a couple good weekends of work and I should have finished cleaning up the mess and start turning our efforts from that of a fireman to that of an explorer.
And as for the picture. That is Gumballhead. Gumball head is a comic book character and recently has become the name of a Three Floyds beer. A nice, crafted beer, Gumballhead is easily my favoriate of the Three Floyd blends. Goes great with a smoked turkey sandwhich with bacon on soft pretzel. After I finished this draft on my iphone using the wordpress app before the app lost the draft, again, i went back inside the local establishment to get a round of Gumballhead for my beanbags-tossin’-buddies to discovery the establishment did not carry brew. Once again, something I wanted was a fingertip away.
