Below is a list of words used in writing Book of Blues that took on a life and meaning of their own.
Beeblebrox: Inspired by the character Zaphod Beeblebrox from the Douglas Adams classic series, “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” to Beeblebrox something is to fumble your way successfully through a problem/situation without be consciously aware of the rhyme, reason, or motivation behind your strategy or decisions. In the series, Intergalactic President Zaphod Beeblebrox has 2 heads and has the connection between his brains severed so he’ll continue to follow his master plan but not be aware of his plan nor be aware of the decisions he makes to implement it.
The Boat: The northwest Indiana riverboat casino where Finn valet parked for a living.
Book of Blues & Book of Blues Sequel: Code words to represent the book Nat Finn and DB Fraizer are editing and writing. Code words are used until the titles and works are trademarked.
The “City”: Often refers to Chicago, IL.
Denominational University: The name Nat Finn uses for the University he attended after high school. Despite speculation, Finn did receive his BA from the school, but will not publicly acknowledge the school until some preexisting conditions are met.
Finndex: Finndexing is the 24-hour period it takes for anyone to understand anything Nat Finn says. Some have reported needing 72 hours
The Region: The common definition of The Region on natfinn.com refers to the area of Northwest Indiana that serves as a suburb of Chicago, IL. The common geography of The Region typically includes the three most northwest counties – Lake, Porter and LaPorte from west to east – as well as the two counties underneath Lake and Porter – Newton and Jasper. The 2008, US Presidential results has brought up unofficial Region debates as to the redrawing of the borders to reflect the counties that voted Democrat in favor of 2008 Democratic Presidential Candidate, Barack Obama, of Chicago, IL. If commonly accepted, the redrawn lines would remove Newton and Jasper County (which voted Republican) and would include St. Joseph county (home of South Bend, IN – Notre Dame University).
Commonly known cities within The Region include Highland (Lake), Gary-Merrillville (Lake), Valparaiso (Porter), Michigan City (LaPorte) and if the lines are redrawn, South Bend (St. Joseph).
Spin Pixies: A term used on this site and in Book of Blues. In short, the term describes the process of getting the creative juices flowing in a person’s brain. Also can be used to describe a brainstorming session by a group. The pixies become “spun” when the idea is created. “Pixie” came about because Nat Finn couldn’t think of the word, “Pinwheel,” and “spin pixies” was the best way he could describe the image in his head. When he thought of creativity, he was thinking of a kaliedoscope and that evolved into the intro to “Pinwheel” from the old Nickelodeon show:
“Pinwheel, Pinwheel, spinning around / Look at my Pinwheel and see what I’ve found.”
Looks like there’s still Pinwheel memorabilia available.
